Mitchell S. Vander Baan, DDS
Dr. Vander Baan is proud to have been born and raised right here in Grand Rapids. Upon graduation from Grand Rapids Christian High Class of 2006, Dr. Vander Baan attended Calvin College for his undergraduate training. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Science with a minor in business. Upon acceptance, Dr. Vander Baan completed his dental program at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.
Keeping with the long tradition of military service in his family, Dr. Vander Baan had the opportunity and privilege to serve his country as an officer in the United States Army. He was awarded a prestigious military scholarship and began this service upon graduation from dental school. Dr. Vander Baan was selected for and completed a rigorous AEGD ( Advanced Education in General Dentistry ) Residency in Columbia, South Carolina. Upon completion of his residency, he moved to Tacoma, WA where he served as the dentist for Madigan Army Hospital for the remainder of his duty. He proudly served with distinction for 5 years and was honorably discharged in 2019 with the rank of Major.
Dr. Vander Baan met the love of his life, Mikaelah, during his military assignment in Washington state. They quickly connected over their shared faith, active lifestyles, and midwestern roots. Hailing from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Mikaelah was quick to challenge the supremacy of her Wisconsin Badgers over Dr. Vander Baan’s beloved Michigan Wolverines. A debate that has yet to be settled! Life on the west coast culminated with an engagement on the summit of Mt. Rainier. After getting married in the summer of 2019, the Vander Baan’s were blessed with a son, Brooks. The final member of the family is Quincy, a 12-year-old black lab mix, who rescued Dr. V the summer before he started dental school.
When Dr. Vander Baan is not at his practice treating patients, you’ll find him on adventures with his family in the outdoors: hiking, skiing, mountain climbing, scuba diving & photography.
